Job Summary
This position requires handling major risks, strategic accounts, and reinsurance negotiations, while supervising the underwriting team and claims handling of various classes of business. The AVP will actively underwrite Direct and Facultative Inward risks, arrange Facultative Outward placements, and ensure all underwriting activity adheres to company guidelines, treaty limits, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage risks across Property, Engineering, Casualty, Liability, and General Accident etc. portfolios.
- Propose and recommend terms and conditions in line with underwriting authority, treaty limitations, and corporate policies.
- Handle large and complex risks, key clients, and reinsurance counterparties.
- Arrange Facultative Outward reinsurance placements when risks exceed treaty capacities.
- Review and approve underwriting decisions and claims within delegated authority; escalate as needed.
- Ensure issuance of accurate, timely policy documentation and compliance with KYC and regulatory standards.
- Oversee renewal planning and execution, ensuring offers are made at least 30 days in advance.
- Strengthen relationships with brokers, reinsurers, clients, and internal teams through regular engagement.
- Support premium collection efforts and maintain strong credit control discipline.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify profitability levers, and contribute to product and pricing strategies.
- Lead or support internal training and mentoring of junior underwriters to build technical capabilities.
- Ensure all activities comply with regulatory requirements, reinsurance treaties, and head office directives.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of underwriting experience in General Lines.
- Bachelor’s degree required; CII, DipCII, or equivalent professional qualifications are strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of reinsurance structures and claims handling.
- Proven ability to manage complex risks, lead underwriting strategies, and build strong market relationships.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
